Burberry Fall 2016 Ready to Wear Collection
Yesterday I was invited to the Burberry store in San Francisco to view the Fall 2016 Ready to Wear collection. I was pleasantly surprised that designer Christopher Bailey has taken Burberry into the see-now-buy-now world of retail. Traditionally, the runway show is a place for buyers to place their orders and then six to eight months later the collection is finally available in stores for customers to purchase. In today’s fast paced society where celebrities and actors are photographed wearing the latest trends straight off the runway, retailers are having a hard time keeping up. Burberry, along with other designers like Tom Ford, have turned to the see-now-buy-now model of retail. So just hours after the Burberry fashion show was presented in London, I was able to shop the same looks and purchase them for immediate gratification.
Marrying the past with the present, Christopher Bailey’s fall 2016 ready to wear collection showcased styles reminiscent of the Victorian era. Models dawned accordion ruffled collars, boyish trench coats, and synched waste lines that validated gender-neutral styles being a trend for today. The authentic old English style harmonized flawlessly with current trends. Bailey was more than successful in doing something so many designers forget to do when drawing inspiration from the past: remembering and including the present. Shearling coats, maxi dresses, oversized sweaters, and chic layering produced a see-now-buy-now collection that everyone must buy now!
This black cape with gold tassels was so much fun to try on! Surprisingly, the black part of the cape was a lightweight knit instead of a heavy wool material, making it a great travel piece.
The Fall 2016 collection was inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando. Guests of the show and those invited to the Burberry store were gifted a copy of the novel. The collection consisted of military jackets and capes paired with pajama pants and ruffled accordion collars.
This is the first time in history that men and women have walked down the Burberry runway together. Moving forward, Burberry will combine its womenswear and menswear to present two shows a year instead of four. This also encourages Burberry’s clients to shop both womenswear and menswear at the same time. For example, I purchased this menswear sweater for myself.
Overall, the collection was very wearable and very Burberry.
